On the shores of the South China Sea, Shantou University Medical College stands out as a young yet profoundly esteemed and vibrant institution. With the consistent concern and strong support of leaders at all levels and Mr. Li Ka-shing, Shantou University Medical College, relying on its unique advantages and seizing the opportunity, has rapidly developed into a rising star among domestic medical colleges and universities.

It is among the first batch of pilot universities in China to conduct the Physician Education and Training Program of Excellence. It is also the first medical college to offer the “5+3” integrated program of clinical medicine (bachelor’s and master’s degrees combined) and is designated for high-level key discipline construction in Guangdong Province.

Currently, it has 3 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 1 second-level discipline authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 5 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master’s degrees, 4 professional degree programs, and 3 postdoctoral research stations. The college also boasts 1 national-level key discipline and 4 provincial-level key disciplines. Since 2012, the discipline of Clinical Medicine has been ranked among the top 1% globally in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators) for 12 consecutive years. As of March 2023, it ranked among the top 0.3% worldwide. In addition, Biology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Pharmacology and Toxicology, have all entered the top 1% in the ESI global rankings. Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine, and Pharmacy have been included in the 2023 China University First-Class Discipline Rankings.

The college has 6 directly affiliated hospitals (First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital, Mental Health Center, Cancer Hospital, Joint Shantou International Eye Center, and Hospital of Stomatology) and 8 clinical colleges (Shenzhen Pediatric Clinical College, Luohu Clinical College, Northern Guangdong Clinical College, Longgang Maternity and Child Health Clinical College, Clinical College of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, Meizhou Clinical College, Longgang Clinical College, and Longgang Third Hospital Clinical College). The First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College has been included in the “Dengfeng Plan” for high-level hospital construction and the first batch of key construction units of high-level clinical medical colleges in Guangdong Province. It is also among the first batch of national standardized residency training bases and national clinical training bases for general practitioners (Eastern Guangdong). In addition, the college has 2 directly affiliated hospitals, 6 non-directly affiliated hospitals, and 14 teaching hospitals.

To comprehensively advance the strategy for disciplinary development and enhance teaching and research capabilities, the college launched a research center construction project in 2019. This project, funded by the Li Ka-shing Foundation, has a total investment of RMB 500 million. The new research center will serve as an important platform for discipline development and talent training, laying a solid foundation for promoting cross-disciplinary integration and achieving leapfrog development.

III. Basic Eligibility Criteria

1. Applicants must have excellent professional dedication, professional ethics, teamwork spirit, research ability and academic potential.

2. Generally, applicants should be 35 or below.

3. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree, which was conferred no more than three years ago, or be a recent graduate with a certificate of conferral of the doctoral degree.

4. Applicants must be in good physical and mental health and capable of engaging in full-time postdoctoral research work.

5. Performance requirements for entry:

(1) General postdoctoral applicants must have published at least one SCI paper in the past five years.

(2) Clinical faculty-type postdoctoral applicants must possess a practicing physician qualification and strong clinical practice skills, and must have published at least one SCI paper in a secondary category (category 1) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the past five years.

(3) Basic faculty-type postdoctoral applicants must have published at least one SCI paper in a primary category (category 1) or two SCI papers in secondary categories (category 1) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the past five years.

(4) Innovative postdoctoral applicants must have published papers in Cell, Nature, Science, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), British Medical Journal (BMJ), CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, as well as top-tier journals in their disciplines (excluding review journals) or top-tier journals in their fields of specialization within the past five years.

IV. Compensation and Benefits

1. During the two years in the station, the annual salary for general postdoctoral researchers starts at RMB 360,000, RMB 480,000 for faculty-type postdoctoral researchers, and RMB 600,000 for innovative postdoctoral researchers.

2. Any research achievements exceeding the targets will be rewarded separately according to relevant regulations, with no upper limit.

3. Postdoctoral researchers may enjoy a special channel for professional title evaluation.

4. Excellent performers may sign an intention agreement for retention at the institution in advance (including affiliated hospitals) during their stay in the station.

5. Postdoctoral fellows engaged in clinical discipline research at affiliated hospitals may simultaneously participate in residency training or specialized physician training during their stay in the station.

6. Postdoctoral researchers may be promoted to senior postdoctoral levels and enjoy corresponding benefits based on their performance during their stay in the station.

7. Accommodation in college apartments or housing allowances will be provided.
